For many dogs, their natural walking pace is faster than humans, so walking on a lead can be a challenge if they have energy to burn. Running can provide a bit of added variety, and is great for dogs whose recall means they need to be kept on a lead.
I'm not an olympic sprinter, but I can usually keep up when a dog wants to do more than a gentle stroll.
